You are on the Rialto Bridge. For centuries this was the only permanent crossing of the Grand Canal. Before the stone bridge there were wooden ones, and one of them collapsed under the weight of a crowd.

Lean on the parapet. The façades you see were homes and warehouses at once: goods arrived by water straight to the ground floor.

Walking down towards San Polo you reach the market. In the morning, fish and vegetable stalls remind you that Rialto is still a workplace. Please be considerate of shoppers. Demo text.
